Yoga Styles
Anusara
"Flowing with Grace," "Flowing with Nature," "Following your Heart."
A unique style of Yoga founded by John Friend in 1997, Anusara yoga is a school of hatha yoga which unifies a life-affirming Tantric philosophy of intrinsic goodness with Universal Principles of Alignment. It will rejuvenate your spirit, invigorate your mind and strengthen your body, but most of all – open your heart!
Ashtanga
"the eight-limbed path"
This is a sacred and traditional approach to practicing yoga. Our non-aggressive classes focus on the primary series "Yoga Chikitsa" which is intended to cleanse the body, mind and spirit. If you're up for a challenge, this class is for you!
Hatha
"HA" (Sun) "THA"(Moon) - a science of yoga which purifies the whole physical body by means of balancing opposing energies through asana (posture), pranayama (breath discipline), mudra (gestures), bandha (energy locks) with focus. Classes move at a medium pace and offer insight into both the internal and external experience of the practice; physically demanding and meditative.
Prenatal/Postnatal
These classes are taught by certified prenatal yoga instructors and help soon-to-be mothers and recently new mothers to incorporate a loving practice into the miraculous process of pregnancy. This is a supportive community environment where you can share this specific experience with others at any stage of your journey through motherhood. For more information on attending yoga while pregnant, please see our faq page.
Tantric
These classes are unique, thoughtful and focus on achieving an energetic effect for the body, mind, a spirit. Often taught without music, tantric hatha enhances the focus on the inner processes; such as breath and energy. Asana is completed at a slower pace than vinyasa and produces a challenge for the body and mind. "To weave or thread" the tantras (a set of texts like the sutras) reveal how everything in existence is woven together, a rich philosophy that integrates spiritual consciousness into all action and thought processes.
Vinyasa
"To place in a special way" (often defined as "flow")
"To place in a special way" (often defined as "flow") Expect to really move throughout these classes while incorporating several traditions of practice into a fluid, breath-linked asana sequence like a dance. It is the most common style of practice in the west; an invigorating practice with a constant faster pace.
Yoga 101
These classes introduce a new practitioner to the techniques and application of yoga. Class is taught at a slower pace.
