Have you ever been frustrated in a yoga class – not because you couldn’t do the poses, but because you felt squished or balled up, instead of spacious and open? You probably just need a few simple tricks to make the poses work for your body!
If you’re in a larger body, a yoga class can be a wonderful place to make peace with your body and yourself. It can also be pure torture when accommodations aren’t made for your larger belly, legs, or chest. This workshop is designed especially for big-bodied yogis who want to be empowered to step into any class with confidence, knowing they have the tools to make yoga work for their bodies.
In this workshop, we’ll explore things like: How to keep your boobs out of your face, twisting and folding when you have a belly, and other “sticky spots” like sun salutations and inversions. We’ll help each other find safe alignment and freedom in poses, learn to modify yoga to fit our bodies, and have some laughs along the way. Yoga teachers who’d like to learn modifications for your larger students are also welcome!
Amber Karnes – creator of Body Positive Yoga – is a ruckus maker, RYT-200 yoga asana teacher, and a lifelong student of her body. In Amber’s classes and workshops, students of all shapes and sizes will find tips, tricks, and modifications to make yoga asana work for their body type. She emphasizes safe alignment and mindful transitions, and guides each student to honor the body they bring to the mat today, while being empowered to learn about the body’s intelligence and power. She serves on the Yoga and Body Image Coalition and seeks to further the message of inclusivity, consent, agency, body positivity, and accessibility for all on and off the mat.
