Sharing Advanced Practices (Day 4 of 4)

PRANAYAMA, PRATYAHARA, DHARANA, & DHYANA

WITH GOPI OM

Breath control (pranayama), sensory withdrawal (pratyahara), concentration (dharana), and meditation (dhyana) are four of the higher-level practices of yoga, appearing in the eight-limbed path of yoga. These limbs follow the practice of asana (postures) on the path, as teachings become more focused on our internal world, working with subtler energies. In this way, these practices are the gateway to the experience of the the final limb, the levels of samadhi (bliss). These teachings are described in the Yoga Sutras by Patanjali and have been further elaborated and expanded upon by yogis for thousands of years. 

In your own personal practice of yoga, you may already be experiencing some of the effects of these powerful practices. Gaining knowledge, control, and understanding in these areas can lead towards a more peaceful existence and can improve overall health and well-being in both spiritual practice and our daily lives.

This training is for those who are interested in expanding upon their existing knowledge from personal practice or other trainings and diving deeper into the heart of your own existence. We will study methods of diving deeper into these areas, identifying which are appropriate for differing situations, and sharing these practices with others. During the course of this training, we will cover prana, subtle anatomy, and techniques for breathing, control of the senses, developing concentration, and meditation. Previous experience with yoga, including but not limited to a 200 hour yoga teacher training, will be helpful. Participants will learn information that will both aid in their own personal practices, as well as helpful information about sharing these teachings with others.

The time in this training will be spent on a combination of seated and moving practices, so please come prepared for both. Bring something to take notes, a mala with 108 beads for mantra recitation, and light vegan snacks, if desired.


Gopi Om (Nicole Sopko) first discovered yoga by chance and was instantly intrigued. She attended her first teacher training with the sole intention of learning more about the practice, but discovered the teachings of yoga to be so transformational that she couldn't keep them to herself and began teaching in 2005. Shortly after, her practice grew immensely due to the discovery and subsequent influence of her beloved Guru, Sri Dharma Mittra, who gave her the name Gopi.

Gopi has completed the advanced level (500 hour & 800 hour) Life of a Yogi teacher trainings at the Dharma Yoga Center in New York with Sri Dharma. She feels blessed to have received and to carry on his teachings. She strives to live every moment as an offering to the divine and to pass on the teachings of yoga as they have been generously shared with her. She is a vegan of nearly 20 years who knows that veganism was her first yogic practice in embracing compassion for all beings. A believer in the power of yoga as a lifestyle, Gopi feels that a playful yoga practice enables a person to approach the more mundane aspects of life with a lighter heart and a more accepting attitude. Her yogic journey has played a big role in her life and she feels lucky to have the opportunity to share that journey with others.

Gopi is the owner of Nature Sanctuary in Chicago, IL. Additionally, she works alongside her life partner, Dan, in the operation of his natural foods company, Upton's Naturals, and vegan cafe, Upton's Breakroom.
