Pranayama is the fourth limb in the eight-limbed system of yoga, as described in the Yoga Sutras by Patanjali, and further elaborated and expanded upon by yogis for thousands of years. This limb follows the practice of asana (postures) on the path, as the teachings become more focused on our internal world, working with subtler energies. In this way, Pranayama is the gateway to the further practices of pratyahara (sense control), dharana (concentration), and dhyana (meditation). As our asana practice progresses, we may begin to notice the presence of this subtle energy, or prana, moving through the body’s energetic channels, or nadis. Gaining knowledge of and control of this energy can lead to a more peaceful existence and can improve overall health and concentration in both spiritual practice and our daily lives.

This training is for those who are interested in learning more about prana, how it moves and works in the body, and which practices are available for us to begin to access and control the movement of energy in the body. During our time together, we will cover subtle anatomy, prana, and several beginning pranayama practices. During the course of the training, there will be weekly homework and the expectation that you will develop a daily home practice which will inform our work during our times together. No prior experience with yoga or pranayama are required to join.

This training is being offered in two parts. You can sign up for Parts 1 & 2 together for a 32-hour training, or just Part 1. Admission to Part 2 only is not available.

Gopi Om (Nicole Sopko) first discovered yoga by chance and was instantly intrigued. She attended her first teacher training with the sole intention of learning more about the practice, but discovered the teachings of yoga to be so transformational that she couldn't keep them to herself and began teaching in 2005. Shortly after, her practice grew immensely due to the discovery and subsequent influence of her beloved Guru, Sri Dharma Mittra, who gave her the name Gopi.

Gopi has completed the advanced level (500 hour & 800 hour) Life of a Yogi teacher trainings at the Dharma Yoga Center in New York with Sri Dharma. She feels blessed to have received and to carry on his teachings. She strives to live every moment as an offering to the divine and to pass on the teachings of yoga as they have been generously shared with her. She is a vegan of nearly 20 years who knows that veganism was her first yogic practice in embracing compassion for all beings. A believer in the power of yoga as a lifestyle, Gopi feels that a playful yoga practice enables a person to approach the more mundane aspects of life with a lighter heart and a more accepting attitude. Her yogic journey has played a big role in her life and she feels lucky to have the opportunity to share that journey with others.

Gopi is the owner of Nature Sanctuary in Chicago, IL. Additionally, she works alongside her life partner, Dan, in the operation of his natural foods company, Upton's Naturals, and vegan cafe, Upton's Breakroom.
